American Water Cyber-attack

Updated on 07/10/2024

American Water is the largest publicly owned water and wastewater treatment company in the United States, serving 14 million users in 14 states and 18 military installations.

As the company disclosed in a 8-K form to the Securities and Exchange Commission, its systems had been accessed without authorisation on October 3rd. Following the detection, the company activated its defence mechanisms and brought in external cybersecurity experts to mitigate and contain the malicious activity, as well as to investigate in conjunction with law enforcement agencies.

At the time of writing, the company has ruled out that its systems have been affected: however, service on the consumer portal and the MyWater app have been halted. Billing services have also been stopped and customers will not be billed for charges while the service is unavailable.
