Cyber Attack on Arkansas Water Supply

Posted date 25/09/2024

Arkansas City, a small town in the state of Kansas (United States), was the victim of a cyberattack targeting its water treatment plant. The attack, which was detected on Sunday, September 22nd, forced the activation of a manual mode of operation to guarantee the water supply, which, thanks to these measures, has not been interrupted.

Randy Frazer, city manager, reported that plant operations are being carried out in analogue mode to ensure supply. Additional security measures have been put in place to protect the infrastructure while authorities continue their investigation.

This year, attacks targeting drinking water supplies in the US have increased by 70% compared to the previous year. Numerous US government reports link this increase to hacker groups backed by hostile governments, such as the Cyber Army of Russia Reborn (CARR).
