MoneyGram service outage
On September 22nd, MoneyGram announced on its X profile that it was experiencing service interruptions in some of its systems and that it was working to resolve them. This work continued, in what they described as a cybersecurity incident, until they finally managed to restore the service on September 26th. The outage affected several of the company's partners around the world, including the Bank of Jamaica.
MoneyGram is the world's second largest money transfer company behind Western Union. It serves more than 50 million users in more than 200 countries and processes more than $200 billion in transactions each year.
The company has not provided details on the nature of the cybersecurity incident, or whether user data has been compromised in any way, but did confirm that it is working with authorities to recover its day-to-day activities in addition to initiating an investigation and protective measures.
