Thailand cuts power supply in different areas to combat cyber scam networks
Last Wednesday, February 5, the Thai authorities suspended the electricity supply in five points bordering Burma as part of their strategy to fight against gangs involved in scamming crimes through the Internet and telephone calls.
This measure has been activated in the face of an increase in alleged scam gangs, which are led by criminals who force smuggled migrants to work for them.
Anutin Charnvirakul, the country's Interior Minister, detailed that the power shutdown was carried out in areas such as Mae Sai, Mae Sot and three areas of the Three Pagoda Pass, in accordance with the guidelines of the National Security Council. This move comes ahead of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra's trip to China to discuss the conflict with President Xi Jinping.
As of press time, Thai police have deported 10 Chinese nationals linked to the alleged kidnapping of an actor who was ransomed in one of these cyber fraud centers in Myanmar.
