Acer has confirmed unauthorised access and data theft on a server.

Acer has confirmed that a known cybercriminal, Kernelware, accessed one of its repair technician document servers stealing 160 GB of data including confidential slides and presentations, technical staff manuals, Windows image format files, binaries, backend infrastructure data, confidential product documents, replacement digital product keys, ISO files, Windows system deployment image files, BIOS components and ROM files. 

The company became aware of the event after receiving a request for payment in cryptocurrencies from the hacker.

The incident is currently under investigation by the authorities and it is ruled out that its customers' data may have been breached.
