17 people arrested for committing fraud through smishing

The National Police has dismantled a criminal group that committed fraud by sending fraudulent SMS (smishing) impersonating a bank. The victims, a total of 170, received an SMS alerting them of an incident in their bank account accompanied by a link. This link redirected to a fraudulent website that requesting the credentials of the online account and the contact telephone number. In this way, the cybercriminals managed to defraud more than 145,000 euros.

Thanks to the victims' complaints and the investigation carried out, several people were identified in different parts of Spain, although more arrests are not ruled out, as the investigation is still open.
