Data breach at Patelco Credit Union

Patelco Credit Union is one of the largest and oldest credit unions in the United States, with most of its customers located in California, particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Last June 29, a ransomware cyber-attack, claimed by the RansomHub group, was detected, resulting in unauthorized access to one of its databases. Although the investigation into the incident is still ongoing and it has not yet been determined precisely what data has been compromised, it has been identified that sensitive information, such as Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, dates of birth and/or email addresses, could be involved. It is estimated that more than 726,000 people could be affected.

From the moment the attack was detected, response teams were activated and law enforcement agencies were notified to contain the threat, recover systems and conduct a thorough investigation.

This incident has generated warnings about possible phishing attempts and other forms of fraud, and those affected are urged to remain alert to any suspicious or unsolicited communications.
